Coins or Paper?

There seems to be a real tug-of-war going on between congress and the American people. It appears that congress is determined to present us with a dollar coin; it also appears that the American people are not interested in this item.

During 2008, the United States Mint will issue $1 coins honoring four past presidents: Monroe, Adams, Jackson and Van Buren.

I like this idea, as it might cause some people to learn more about the past of our great country. The question is, how do we get the coins into the hands of the American public? In my opinion, the solution to this problem is to stop printing paper dollars. This will help the vending machine industry, as it can recognize coins more efficiently than paper money. It will require a real education campaign to get this idea off the ground.

As an after-thought to this discussion, I find it sad that our American dollar has taken such a beating on the international market. That’s a discussion for another day.

I have mixed emotions on this to be honest. It is funny that it is a topic of discussion since just tonight I ran into something interesting. I had asked a friend of mine last year to get me the first four dollars of the presidents. When he handed them to me, he said"here's your quarters so I thought he had misunderstood what I wanted. Just quickly glancing at them, I put them in a bank I had thinking he had given me the wrong denomination so didn't know any different.

Although it is true the dollar as a coin may be a bit thicker and larger, it wasn't readily noticable to me but i recent purchased one of the talking banks from Speak to Me Catalog and it was only until I put the coins in tonight that i truly found my friend had given me dollars. Anyway, paper on the other hand obviously is also a problem unless you have someone to advise you of the bill's denomination or you have someway of reading it yourself.

There I've spoken (lol).
