Summer Activity:

The yearly limerick contest, presented in the Arizona Republic, has become a summer ritual for me. Each year, readers are invited to submit limericks; the subject is the Arizona heat. Each summer I can’t resist giving it a try. The prize is really secondary. I simply enjoy writing limericks. Truthfully, my efforts aren’t great, but they aren’t bad either. I guess I’ve been entering this contest for four or five years; this was the second year my limerick received honorable mention. It appeared on Monday, August 13 in the Arizona Republic. Now, you know what’s coming, don’t you? Before I share my limerick, I’ll invite you to submit one here, on any subject, if you would like to do so. It’s an enjoyable activity for a lazy summer afternoon. Knowing the high quality of the folks who read this blog, I’m sure your limerick will be in good taste. Have fun reading this one, and writing your own!

Our hot weather causes me dismay;

as I envy the weatherman's pay.

It's no great feat

to simply repeat

the same forecast, day after day!

Congratulations on your honorable mention RL. Just as our summers here in Chicago are no equal to your Arizona summers, my limerick skills are no match to yours. But here goes...

Your poem caused me to ponder this
Chicago's summers are onerous
although I'm no knave
I don't over-bathe
do I seem a bit malodorous?

Hey Paul: You really out-did yourself with your limerick; thanks for sharing it.
