Putting the spotlight where it belongs!

As is true with most people, I was saddened to hear about Michael Vick’s activities with dog fighting and the killing of animals. There’s no excuse for the cruelty he and other members of his group exhibited toward these animals. The outcry and publicity against Vick is justified and understandable.

What I don’t understand however, is the lack of attention other stories which, to me, are more important are receiving. For example, how many times have we read or heard of an athlete striking and injuring a wife or girl friend? Over and over, we have one human being mistreating another. These unfortunate crimes deserve attention. When appropriate, punishment should be administered; but more important, education should be in place to help prevent these terrible crimes against women. Evidently, the college and professional teams involved will not take a stand until pressured by the public. Everyone has an obligation to speak out against these crimes. Are we as sports fans fearful of disciplining a good player who is guilty of a crime against women? Is the success of our team that important to us? I hope and pray that it is not!

Another Limerick!

Here’s another contribution to our limerick collection. This comes from Mrs. Janice Blatz of Grove City, Ohio.

I sit at my desk in Grove City
And really, it's such a pity--
It’s too hot to think;
Perhaps a strong drink
Would help me write something witty!

Summer Activity:

The yearly limerick contest, presented in the Arizona Republic, has become a summer ritual for me. Each year, readers are invited to submit limericks; the subject is the Arizona heat. Each summer I can’t resist giving it a try. The prize is really secondary. I simply enjoy writing limericks. Truthfully, my efforts aren’t great, but they aren’t bad either. I guess I’ve been entering this contest for four or five years; this was the second year my limerick received honorable mention. It appeared on Monday, August 13 in the Arizona Republic. Now, you know what’s coming, don’t you? Before I share my limerick, I’ll invite you to submit one here, on any subject, if you would like to do so. It’s an enjoyable activity for a lazy summer afternoon. Knowing the high quality of the folks who read this blog, I’m sure your limerick will be in good taste. Have fun reading this one, and writing your own!

Our hot weather causes me dismay;

as I envy the weatherman's pay.

It's no great feat

to simply repeat

the same forecast, day after day!
